The Machine Shop is excited to present Ghosts of the Past, Creators of the Future: new work by Trevor Wade Thomas.  Please join us for his opening, May 4th, 6-9pm.
Over the last three months, Trevor Wade Thomas has explored the history of the Machine Shop through stories, old photographs, and an exploration of the the building we have all come to know. In an attempt to connect with the history of this space, he has created a body of work using traditional techniques and surfaces to show what once was an actual machine shop, as well as what has become a creative space filled with the visionaries of the world we occupy. Through images of blue collar work, architecture, interior spaces, and the nooks and crannies of this building, Thomas hopes you will follow him through this fascinating history.
Artist Biography:
Trevor Thomas is a painter and draftsman from Colorado Springs, CO. He is a graduate of Colorado College (2010, magna cum laude) with a B.A. in fine art and was shortly thereafter the apprentice and principle assistant to Eric J. Bransby on a mural commission for the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.  Outside of Colorado Springs, Trevor’s exhibition record includes venues in Denver, Gothenburg (Sweden), Bergsön (Sweden), and Florence (Italy).
From late 2010-2012, Trevor has worked alongside Bransby on the Fine Arts Center Mural. Under Eric’s tutelage, Trevor developed strong skills in fresco painting practices, anatomical figure drawing, and traditional figurative oil painting. During this project, Trevor has established a profound understanding of the figure and wall painting. The FAC mural was unveiled on April 20, 2012. The following March, Trevor unveiled a mural of his own for the Colorado College Dance Department in Frederick H. Cossitt Memorial Hall.
At his core, Trevor has a strong devotion to perceptual drawing and painting. While at Colorado College, he involved himself in several study abroad programs, including a three month figure drawing intensive at the Charles Cecil Studios in Florence, Italy. Trevor recently earned his MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and simultaneously concluded work on an altarpiece painting for a New Jersey church. He lives and works in Old Colorado City, and he is an adjunct faculty in murals, painting, and drawing at Pikes Peak Community College.
Artist Statement:
As I paint, I think about the poetic linkages that naturally occur in the world around us. The people, places, and things that construct our lives provide a narrative worth its own exploration, but they do not always shed light on how we experience the world. In an attempt to find some understanding, my paintings function as a constant exploration of the physical world. I ground myself in my own perceptions, make my surfaces by hand, and paint observationally. Over the course of many hours, I paint while looking more and more closely at the world around me in an effort to prolong the observational moment for as long as humanly possible. I see my artistic practice as a life’s work, one that requires discipline and patience. Its yields are slow, but I believe them to be profound and indicative of larger truths about the world in which we live.
